WAYNE COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – People detained at Wayne County Jail will no longer receive paper mail.
Wayne County Sheriff’s Office announced a partnership with TextBehind that makes possible the transition to mail scanning at no additional cost to the county.
Starting on December 2, 2024, non-legal mail from friends and family must be addressed as:
Inmate Name
Wayne County Jail IL
PO Box 76550
Highland Heights, KY 41076
Enclosing cash, checks, or other forms of currency is not allowed.
Legal mail and money orders will follow the current vetting and delivery processes.
According to Wayne County Sheriff’s Office this change comes as a response to contraband problems in correctional facilities that’s allegedly caused workers to be exposed to drugs — an issue Illinois state representative David Friess has proposed combatting with an implementation of mail scanning in prisons statewide.
“For the safety of the workers, I mean – their job is tough enough. It’s dangerous enough. We do not need to add this extra layer of of danger,” he said.
